A set of cherished family memories, providing insights into growing up without, but actually WITH much more, a foundation of love and common sense. Gilbert captures both a time and a place where true human connection is valued, differences celebrated rather than being considered threatening, and growing pains lay the foundation for a successful life. A great summer read!
I loved, loved, loved this book! All I was going to do was skim through the book and look at some of the pictures, next thing I knew it was 3 hours later and I was still reading. Even though I have attention issues with reading, he had a wonderful way of holding my interest. It’s a fantastic history lesson, with stories to make one laugh out loud as well. Farm life during the depression has always made for stories of endurance and spunk. A lot can be learned by observing the way people handled themselves during a time of uncertainty. I will be buying multiple copies of this book as Christmas presents and highly recommend anyone reading it. I also look forward to reading Trickster Jack next.

Reid Gilbert's memoir, The Twelve Houses of my Childhood, is as good as drinking a cup of chocolate Ovaltine before bedtime, visiting neighbors in the front yard rather than via a computer screen, and eating a cone of ice cream handed to you by the "ice cream man" on a hot summer evening. It is, to the author's best recollection, a story told with humor and attention to detail, about a boy born in 1930 and his "growing up years" in rural North Carolina. He takes us along with him on his family's journey from house to house—twelve in all—until we feel as if we are closer to his "kinfolk" that most of their neighbors! You will read about brother Ott and sisters Della Sue and Evelyn, as well as Reid's parents and the people they encountered along the way. This is a rare jewel of a book—one that will either take you back to the days when people looked at each other instead of at their cell phones, or introduce you to them. Either way, the images evoked by masterful storyteller, E. Reid Gilbert, will stick with you long after the final page is turned.
Yes, The Twelve Houses of My Childhood is a southern coming-of-age story. Young Reid encounters "the fair sex" from time to time, with mixed success. He hunts possum. He is introduced to the principles of social justice, not only as a witness to the segregation of his "colored" playmates, but also as a target of mockery and neglect from his more affluent white neighbors and teachers. But this tenderly rendered tale is also a loving portrait of a family and a time when things like running water, electric light, and a real Frigidaire to save Mamma from having to fetch milk from the spring house were faraway miracles, not givens of domestic life. Holding my electronic tablet in my hands, laughing out loud as my old professor learned to plow a straight row, or shift gears in the makeshift tractor that they called a "Doodlebug," I couldn't help feeling a little spoiled by all the gadgets and gizmos that fill my life. I wonder if a few less illuminated screens, and a few more walks in the trees with loved ones might not be better for my soul.
How to sum up the experience of reading the memories of a man I have loved every day, even though I have not seen him for thirty years? I was shaken almost to tears when I turned the last page. I'm still grieving, a little. I loved this book so much that it hurt to have to finish it. I appreciate the convenience, but I think I'll be ordering a copy for my bookshelf. I want to be able to share it.
